Acrylic Nails: Beginners

Read the Before

Acrylic nails have been around for decades, but they’ve recently gained popularity because of a combination of celebrities, Instagram, and our collective nail art passion. Acrylics are ideal for people wishing to add length and strength to their nails, but they may also provide a wider, more uniformly shaped canvas for those who enjoy detailed manicure designs. Thinking about trying out the look? We invited Hannah Lee, Sally Hansen’s nail specialist and professional manicurist, to explain the procedure, how to keep them looking great, and everything else you need to know.

What Are Acrylic Nails?

Acrylic nails are artificial extensions applied over natural nails to enhance their appearance. They consist of a blend of liquid monomer and powder polymer, which, when applied to the natural nails, creates a durable and resilient coating. Acrylic nails can be shaped, filed, and painted just like real nails. Known for their strength and longevity, they are a popular choice for individuals seeking to lengthen or strengthen their nails.

How Are Acrylic Nails Different Than Gel Nails?

Both acrylic and gel nails provide an additional strong layer to the natural nail. However, gel nails require UV light to cure or set properly. According to Lee, acrylic nails are generally stronger than gel nails, making them more durable. If you’re aiming to significantly lengthen your nails, acrylics would be the preferred choice. On the other hand, if you prefer a more natural-looking nail enhancement, gel nails would be the better option.

Are acrylic nails safe?

“Acrylic nails often receive criticism, but in reality, they aren’t inherently worse for your nails compared to other artificial nail products,” explained the manicurist. However, they do come with potential side effects if not properly cared for. “Improper removal can weaken the natural state of your nails, but when done correctly, it shouldn’t cause permanent damage. That’s why it’s crucial to have a professional handle the removal process,” she emphasized. In addition to safe removal, allowing some breathing room between sessions is highly beneficial for your natural nails. “It’s advisable to take a break from acrylics every three to six months to give your nails a chance to rejuvenate,” advised Lee.

How Long Do Acrylic Nails Last?

“Acrylic nails typically last six to eight weeks, with a fill required every two to three weeks, depending on your nail growth,” explained Lee. A fill, also referred to as a touchup between the bottom of the nail and the cuticle, not only enhances the appearance of the manicure but also prolongs its lifespan. “Fills are crucial because as your nails grow, lifting can occur,” Lee emphasized.

How Can You Make Acrylics Last Longer?

Contrary to common assumptions, you can still use your hands normally with acrylic nails; however, Lee recommends wearing gloves when cleaning. “Use moisturizer and cuticle oil to maintain the health of your hands and nails,” she advises. “I personally love Sally Hansen’s Vitamin E Cuticle Oil,” she adds.

Just like with any beauty treatment, it’s essential to research the salon beforehand—proper care and attention to detail will ensure that your manicure lasts longer. Additionally, Lee emphasizes that the main enemies of acrylic nails are wearing them for extended periods without breaks and neglecting to keep up with fills.

What’s the Best Way to Remove Acrylics?

To properly remove artificial nails, consult a skilled nail technician. They will usually use an electric file to carefully remove the top layer of acrylic nails. Then, your nails are often covered in foil and bathed in acetone for 15 minutes. The residual acrylic is then carefully removed with a nail pusher, and the nails are rehydrated with cuticle oil. This approach guarantees safe and effective removal without harming your natural nails.
